Editorial Policy

Accuracy and sourcing

We base reporting on primary sources, official records and direct, named evidence wherever possible. Claims we cannot verify are labelled as unconfirmed or left out. Statistics are linked to their original source.

Corrections and updates

When we get something wrong we fix it promptly and note the change at the top of the article, with the updated date shown in the byline. To report an error, use our contact page.

Headlines from other outlets

Our section pages (U.S., UK, World, Business, Technology, Health, Science, Sports and Entertainment) link to reporting by other publishers. There are two kinds of entry, and each is labelled:

  • News outlets. We show the original headline, the outlet’s own short feed summary, its thumbnail image (linked from the outlet, credited, and never re-hosted) and a clear link to the source. We do not reproduce articles, and we do not claim that reporting as our own.
  • Government and public bodies. For announcements from agencies whose material is in the public domain or openly licensed (for example U.S. federal agencies, or GOV.UK under the Open Government Licence), we show an excerpt of the official release, the licence, and a link to the original.

If a publisher asks us to remove its summary or image, we will do so promptly: write to us at the address on our contact page.

Reviews and independence

When we publish reviews, they will reflect our own testing and research. Manufacturers and retailers will not see reviews before publication and cannot buy a favourable score. If a product is supplied free of charge we will say so in the article.

Advertising and affiliate links

Ads are served by third parties and are clearly labelled. Some articles contain affiliate links; we earn a commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. This never affects our editorial judgement.

Use of AI tools

We may use software tools, including AI, for research, drafting or editing assistance. Every article is reviewed, fact-checked and edited by a person before publication, and that person is accountable for its content. Automated tools are never used to republish another outlet’s reporting.
